The Department of Chemistry, University of Shanghai for Science and Technology (USST) has a long history. Its origin could be traced back to Hujiang University, which was established in 1910. The Department of Chemistry has a famous reputation of scholastic excellence. We are affiliated to a number of famous chemists, like Dai li xin, Wang er kang, Shen zhi quan, who are Academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, that had studied in the Department of Chemistry.
The Department of Chemistry consists of Chemistry Institution and Institute of Applied Chemistry with the corresponding two research centers-basic chemistry and applied chemistry, respectively. At present, the Department of Chemistry has 20 faculty and staff members, including 4 professors, 6 associate professor, 8 lecturers, 1 post-doctorate qualified teacher and 3 laboratory assistants, in which 65% of them are master tutors. Additionally, there are a large number of experienced professors are successively appointed by the Department of Chemistry.
The Department of chemistry is taking on the teaching of chemical public foundation courses for the whole school. It provides important basic courses for engineering students, including general chemistry, physical chemistry, organic chemistry, analytical chemistry and so on. Among these courses, "Physical Chemistry" course is our high-quality course, and the course of "General Chemistry" as well as "Analytical Chemistry" are the key courses for the Shanghai Municipal Education Commission. The undergraduate course, “Applied Chemistry”, began to be enrolled in 2008 and since its birth 9 years ago, more than 160 undergraduate students have graduated from the department. The graduates’employment rate has reached above 90% over the past years and even achieved100% in 2016. Since a science experiment center has built in the south campus in 2009, inorganic chemistry laboratory, organic chemistry laboratory, analytical chemistry laboratory and other sectors were established consecutively. At present, laboratories cover 1200 square meters and are well equipped with advanced precision measuring and analyzing instruments. The department also hosts a series of high-level scientific research and talents cultivation platforms, including the Nano-Biotechnology and Applied Research Center and the Shanghai Talents Career Practice Base for green chemical and ecological environmental protection industry.
Through several years’ efforts, the Department of Chemistry of USST has developed into a chemistry talent training and scientific research institute. In the training of the undergraduate students, we always gave high priority to the experiment and practice teaching. For example, we signed Practice Base agreements with a number of enterprises and the students have obtained great fruits in Shanghai college students Chemical experiment competition and some other activities.
The department is authorized to offer both master and doctoral degrees in chemistry.So far, the Department of Chemistry has set up academic master’s programs for Chemistry Science (first level discipline) and Green Chemistry Process and Resources Comprehensive Utilization (second level discipline), specialized master's degree program for Chemical Engineering(first level discipline)，and doctoral program for Biomedical Chemistry and Sensing (second level discipline). The research topicsof Green Chemistry Process and Resources Comprehensive Utilization mainly include green chemistry monitoring and evaluation, green preparation chemistry and process optimization with resource utilization, and began to be enrolled in 2013. The research directions of Chemical Engineering involve biochemical engineering, applied chemistry and process systems engineering, and first recruited in 2017. For Chemistry Science, it will begin to recruit students next year (2019), and its research interestscover the disciplines of physical chemistry, organic chemistry, inorganic chemistry, analytical chemistry, intelligent chemical process engineering, etc. Biomedical Chemistry and Sensing, it will also begin to accept students next year (2019), and its research topics include nanobiomedical technology, biosensing, medical detection, biomedical materials, etc.
In recent years, the department has made considerable achievements: more than 300 academic papers have been published in prestigious journals. We have undertaken over 20 projects of national-level and provincial-level(ministerial-level) and more than 50 projects of Natural Science Research Foundation of China. With the features of intelligent chemical process engineering and other research features, itserves in the field of intelligent manufacturing industry, such as chemical industry.
